Craft beer may be made by small breweries, but it has become big business. With a brand new brewery opening in Britain every day and almost double this in America, gone are the days where craft beer is hard to find. But it is hard to scope out the best pick of the bunch, so we’ve done that for you.
CLOUDWATER – BALTIC PORTER, 7.2%
Using seasonal ingredients at their very best, Cloudwater have become a favourite brewery amongst us beer-heads, having just come second in the ‘Best Brewery in the Wold’ category at the Rate Beer Best awards. This porter is brewed with a rich malt base featuring caramel, vienna, munich and carafa special malts.
TINY REBEL – STAY PUFT PORTER, 5.2%
The first brew of this luxurious dark ale sold out within just 36 hours – but luckily it is back and well worth a try. With the classic roasty qualities of a good dark ale, Tiny Rebel have added marshmallow to give it a decadent sweetness that’s perfect for those cold winter nights.
BREWSKI – BARBARIAN IPA, 6%
Arriving on the bar in a stubby with a label that looks suspiciously like a 5 year old is in charge of the artwork at Brewski, we urge you not to judge a bottle by its label. Once opened, the complex flavour will definitely win you over – hoppy with lots of tropical fruit aromas. Peaches, pineapple, tangerine, grapefruit and mango, supported with floral and earthy notes makes for a smooth texture and a lingering bitter finish.
BEAVERTOWN – NECK OIL SESSION IPA
Described as their ‘every day, all day, easy drinking, go to IPA’, Beavertown aren’t wrong. It’s crisp, light and punchy, and crammed full of hops added at different stages of the brew to utilise their individual flavours and reduce bitterness. The overall flavour packs a punch and it’s hard to believe its low abv.
BEST LAGERS & PILSNERS
CAMDEN TOWN BREWERY – CAMDEN PILS, 4.6%
A pilsner lager with a citrus hop twist, this offering from Camden Town Brewery is stunningly refreshing and perfect for a summers afternoon. Sharp in flavour with a piney aroma and a reassuring bitterness.
LOST RIVERS – NECKINGER LAGER, 4.5%
Named after one of London’s lost rivers, The Neckinger, there’s no flavour lost in this premium lager. The Essex based brewing company Lost Rivers have used German mandarin bavaris and huell melon hops for this lager, providing a bitterness and light orangey aroma, while the beers body is bready and dry.
BEST FRUIT BEERS
BUXTON BREWERY X OMNIPOLLO – ORIGINAL BLUEBERRY SLAB CAKE ICE CREAM, 7%
Part of one of our favourite ever beer collabs – the ice cream collection from Buxton and Omnipollo – this blueberry sour is the perfect dessert beer. With aromas of blueberry cupcakes, the vanilla works perfectly to compliment the tang of the blueberry. The other beers in this collection are well worth a try too.
DELIRIUM RED, 8.5%
This dark red cherry beer has an aroma of almond and sour cherries and is the perfect balance between sweet and sour. Made by the same Belgian brewery as award winning Delirium Tremens it was obvious that their cherry beer was going to be brewed to perfection, and it hasn’t disappointed.
