Planning on Netflix and chill this weekend? Forget trawling through the endless choices – we’ve got our pick of the five things you should be watching on Netflix this weekend.
With a caste featuring Carey Mulligan and Mary J Blige, this period drama is a bittersweet story of racial tensions in post World War II America. Nominated for four Oscars, it’s definitely one to watch.
This coming-of-age comedy focusing on 18 year old autistic Sam is a heartfelt glimpse into family life and coping with Autism. Sam decides it’s time for him to find his independence and start dating, which sends his mother on her own life changing path. Created and written by Robia Rashid and Academy-Award winning Seth Gordon, series 1 is on Netflix now.
A SERIOUS MAN
The Coen brothers return with this dark comedy currently streaming on Netflix. The pitch perfect dialogue and cinematography of ‘A Serious Man’ is no surprise from the Coen brothers, and although admittedly it’s no ‘No Country for Old Men’, it is an admirably low key and deeply compelling depiction of the absurdity of human existence.
UNDER THE SKIN
Aliens? Check. Scarlett Johanssen? Check. Scarlett Johanssen as an alien? Check. This experimental arthouse sci-fi movie is spooky and stylish, based on the 14 year old novel by Michael Faber. Cruising around Glasgow in her white transit van wearing a dark wig, fur coat and blood red lipstick, Johanssen’s alien character scopes out her male victims.
CREEP & CREEP 2
Not to be confused with London underground horror of the same title, Creep and Creep 2 are found-footage films featuring a stunningly unnerving performance from Mark Duplass. The story of a deranged serial killer who uses Craiglist as his hunting ground, this film has all of the best ingredients of a classic slasher horror with an experimental, indie feel.
